99 Cents
What a blessing the store Goodwill is! Shelby and I were sitting in the van, reading the "Golden Goblet" when I decided I could not read anymore. It was cold, rainy and a cup of coffee sounded good. So in the process of finding something hot to drink, we stopped in at Goodwill and spent 99 cents and bought this game "Guess Who". Now with coffee in hand, a good game, we enjoyed waiting for Amber to finish up her class. It was a good day!

Smaller scale...
This year, we went all out for girls time (our 2 and 1/2 weeks in Mio and then a wonderful weekend meeting friends in Chicago) when I started my 4 month leave of absence from work. Our Chicago trip was a birthday celebration for Shelby's friend Jordan and Mike and I chose to treat it as a celebration for Shelby's bday. Therefore, when Shelby's actual birthday came around, we did something on a very small scale. She had 2 friends spend the night and McDonald's delivered to the party. The girls loved it, Shelby loved it, and Amber even had craft time with the girls. (pictures to come later). So even though it was very small scale, the impact was the same, Shelby felt celebrated. We did do a family dinner on the actual day of her bday (pix to come) and that completed her transition into her 12th year. (wiping away tears!)
On a another note, Shelby never went to bed the night of her sleepover, she was so excited, so thrilled, so full of energy, she kept going and going and going, while her friends slept. Needless to say, I was very tired the next day, but the girls picked up early in the morning where they left off the night before. It was a fun time.

Problem Solved!
Shelby has had a light on her desk that had to have the cord jiggled to get the light to work. We knew that was not safe. When we were at Goodwill, we found a lamp for $4.99. We brought it home and Shelby painted it and now it perfectly sits on her desk!! It is perfect :)

Cooking time with Shelby!
Shelby made her first gluten free apple pie.........and when it was done cooking, she announced she did not like apple pie. What a goof ball. The upside is, we had a good time baking and she loves being in the kitchen.

Favorite Owosso Resturant...
Can I say that the Holliday girls are able to recommend places to eat in various cities. Now, we can not say the restaurants are top of the line, but the food and atmosphere and gadgets is what we base our decisions on. So for the city of Owosso, we eat at Greg and Lou's and usually it is the meeting place for us when we meet my mom for dinner.
The food taste great, the atmosphere is relaxed and there is enough coin machines to keep Shelby entertained. There is also flyers and paper magazines that she can gather and look at. So our time together and meal is pleasurable. This past Sat. we met my mom for dinner. (the fried chicken dinner was delicious.)
This moment also starts a new journey for my mom and me. A journey of going into the past and asking for forgiveness of some things that happened and reconciling conversations that did not go as planned. So the picture for me is a very happy one. (Grace for the Good Girl moment!)

Zoo time in the fall....
Sometimes you just need to enjoy the moments you have and now with the 4 months off for me, we are able to do that. Over the next month I will be incorporating the book I am reading and tying that into our homeschool day and the extra curricular activity we decide to do.
On Thursday, our oldest has a Chemistry Lab Class in Clio, which is a good 45 minute drive for us. It has become a routine for us to drive her, check out Goodwill and Kmart and eat at a restaurant. A few years ago when we did this same thing, the girls loved it, now that our oldest is able to drive, she wants to drive herself. I can not blame her, so we will have to make an exception and let her drive and Shelby and I will hang out in the back of the van so we can still do our routine, but Amber can do all the driving. (Lord grant me patience and nerves of steel as this is a good thing, but yet, so easier said than done!)
As a side note, Amber is a great driver, just needs more practice and odd situations so she can learn and yet, be safe. So let's see if I can stick to my word and allow the above to happen from now on.
On our way back home yesterday we stopped at our towns zoo. Shelby, who has always loved and adore giraffes, now loves and adores bob cats. So we thought we would stop and check things out and use the membership we bought and yes, her science unit is on mammals; this is a win, win all around.
We forgot our camera, so we used our cell phone camera, which I have been told, is not what you want to use when you want the pictures to last. It was all we had, so another win win.
Shelby was very excited and ran to the jump measure to see how high she could jump, needless to say we had to remind her to not jump so we could take a picture with our cell phone camera.
We really liked checking the zoo out when it is cooler weather, the animals that could be out would much more active. Shelby then ran to the playground area with the dolphin statue and told me to take her picture because it is tradition, I always take her picture on the dolphin every time we go. (note to remember: that would make a great scrapbook page if I could find all those dolphin pictures.)
..then for ole' time sakes, Amber climbed on the wobbly platform and had her picture taken with Shelby. I was reminded this was another traditional picture. (where are those pictures? hence, another scrapbook page).
By this time, it was raining at a good pace and we debated about rushing through the rest of the zoo or just heading to the van.......going back to the mission of the month of Oct.....enjoy the moments....we therefore continued on. We rode the carousel, the train, and shopped in the zoo store. It was a wonderful hour at the zoo!

First Day Over

First Day of Bible Camp is over........whew, and I feel like we missed the mark by 1 hour. If we had 1 more hour to finish up the areas I was in charge of .......... it would have been so much better! Now to prepare for day two and allow the Lord to work! To treat myself to something good.........I am off to watch "Gone With the Wind" and drink coffee for the morning! Yeah :)

Celebrate!

Now that we are head deep into Bible Camp preparations and meetings, true personalities start to shine through, and I am no different. I think it is a combination of greasy fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner that puts the extra spin on things, along with the early and late hours that seem to happen because of the nature of Bible Camp and then children who have been spending way too much time at church..............but we are having fun!!

Treasures

As I was cleaning house the other day, I found a drawing in our school room on the dry erase board. It was perfect and summarized a moment of contentment and peace in our house! (It also tells me my daughter does not think I am overweight, even though I am!) We all know drawings can be very powerful and revealing. My day is off to a good start!

Enjoy the Moment
Coming off of a Graduation Open House and Ceremony that we hosted was exhausting...but all the open houses we have attended since our weekend and all the food we have ate is even more tiring (very filling, but tiring). On top of this our family is neck deep in Bible Camp (VBS) preparations, set-up, meetings, etc. Needless to say time and energy are scarce.. My heart strings are tied together and I am going to remember this:

"Sometimes you have to go against the norm, and just lay down and enjoy the moment." Our youngest has no shame in just embracing every activity she does and taking it all in. So as the overwhelming feelings start to set in this week, I am going to remember the above picture and just lay down and enjoy!

This picture reminds me of the simple days of life........when Mike and I were the sparkle of our child's eyes, I could do anything with the kids and they enjoyed every moment and life was at a slower pace. The past few weekends we have spent at graduation open houses and I am realizing life is going by faster than it did before.
So that I can make the most of it - I will tie my heart strings together and remember to enjoy all those unexpected moments when life throws you a gentle hug.

...tiredness

My hope is to some how find the energy I use to have ........ the energy to push your child on the swing, plant flowers, play a game. Some how I allow work and society to dictate to me what I should be doing and how much.
Life is so short and when you stop and put your kids first.......the harvest is well worth it. Take a moment, find the fries and enjoy!
